Salat Time Calculation (Salah, Prayer)

Salat Time Calculation (Salah, Prayer)

I- FAJR (Morning Twilight) starts with the dawn and ends before sunrise

II- ZUHR (Noon) begins after Midday when the trailing limb of the sun has passed the meridian. For convenience add few minutes (5/Five) to mid-day (zawal) to obtain the start of ZUHR. ZUHR ends at the start of ASR time.

III- ASR (Afternoon) timing of depends on the length of the shadow cast by an object.

According to the Maliki, Shafi`i & Hanbali school of jurisprudence, ASR begins when the length of the shadow of an object exceeds the length of the object. (Length of any object's shadow equals the length of the object itself plus the length of that object's shadow at noon)

According to the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, ASR begins when the length of the shadow exceeds TWICE the length of the object. (Length of any object's shadow is twice the length of the object plus the length of that object's shadow at noon)

ASR time ends at start of MAGHRIB time.

IV- MAGHRIB (Evening Twilight) begins at sunset and ends at the start of ISHA.

V- ISHA (Night) starts after dusk when the evening twilight disappears and end before time of FAJR.

Things that Void, Not Void or Hateful the Fast

Things that Makrooh (Detestable/Hateful) the Fast

1.       The fast becomes makrooh by lying, back-biting, swearing or by ill-treating others.
2.       It is also Makrooh to taste anything or to chew anything and spit it out.
3.       It is makrooh to kiss, embrace or commit acts to arouse passion.
4.       To gargle excessively and to take water excessively through nose in large quantities is Makrooh.

Things That Make The Fast Null And Void

1.       Eating, drinking, or sexual intercourse - if committed while aware that one is fasting - makes fast void.
2.       Smoking in any form will nullify the fast.
3.       Anything even smaller than a gram that was stuck in the teeth nullifies the fast if it is swallowed.
4.       Medical drops or oil inserted in the nose or ears nullifies the fast.
5.       If one swallows spit by licking it off after it leaves the mouth, it nullifies the fast. If one spews while aware that he is fasting, the fast is null and void. This is not the case if he spews less than a mouthful.

Things That Do Not Nullify The Fast

1.       Insects, smoke dust that goes into the throat uncontrollably.
2.       Applying surma (collyrium) to eyes.
3.       Applying oil to hair will not nullify the fast.
4.       While sleeping, if one experiences a seminal discharge, this does not nullify the fast.
5.       If water passes into the ears it does not break the fast.

Expliation (Kaffara) For Breaking The Fast.
The Kaffara for deliberately breaking fast can avail any of below provision.

1.       Fast for 60 consecutive days
2.       Feed 60 poor people if ill-health forbids the former. One can feed 60 people 2 proper meals, or One can feed one poor person 2 proper meals for 60 days. or One can give the poor 1 Kg and 700g of wheat or cash to its value per person to 60 poor people.
3.       Buy and set free a slave

Fidya
If a person is unable to fast due to old age or some serious illness will increase due to fasting, then that person will have to give 'Fidya' for every fast. The amount that should be given for Fidya is:

1.       One kg and 700g of wheat or cash to its value.
2.       Two meals or cash to its value.

Any of the above should be given to a poor person. Please note the amount stated above is per fast. So if a person has missed 30 fast, then any one above provisions that a person wishes to give, must be multiplied by 30.

Safar al Muzaffar, 9th Month of Islamic Calendar (Sifr, Sufr, Sifar, Sufar, Safer, Sufer, Sifer)

Safar al Muzaffar literally means ‘the void (empty) month’.

The origin of this word has two theories:
1) When the pagan Arabs went on their looting expeditions they would leave their houses empty or ‘sifr’ meaning void.
2) The word is derived from the Arabic word for yellow called ‘sufr’: as when it was first named it fell in the time of autumn, hence the derivation the word yellow as all the leaves at that time turned yellow.

It is held to be the unluckiest month of the calendar, as in this month Adam was turned out of the Garden of Eden.

Question:
Is there anything special in month of Safar al Muzaffar, because people are saying that this month Allah sends many problems for his slaves? Is it true that we are supposed to pray specific prayers to protect ourselves and we are not supposed to marry or have any other happy occasion?

Answer:
The answer of this question that We supplicate Allah to bless us to follow the right Sunnah. Know that a Muslim must safeguard his faith and keep it away from myths and superstitions. Allah says (interpretation of meaning):

{Say: "Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allâh has ordained for us. He is our Maulâ (Lord, Helper and Protector)." And in Allâh let the believers put their trust.}[9: 51]

He also says (interpretation of meaning):

{… And whosoever puts his trust in Allâh, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allâh will accomplish his purpose. …}[65: 3]

The month of Safar al Muzaffar is like all other months. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) condemned what is said about this month. Abu Hurairah (Radiya Allahu Anhu) reported from the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) that he said:

"No 'Adwa (i.e. no contagious disease is conveyed to others without Allah's permission); nor (any evil omen in the month of) Safar al Muzaffar; nor Hama." A bedouin said, "O Allah's Apostle! What about the camels which, when on the sand (desert) look like deers, but when a mangy camel mixes with them they all get infected with mange?" On that Allah's Apostle said, "Then who conveyed the (mange) disease to the first (mangy) camel?"

It is narrated from Ibn Masoud that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said:

"No 'Adwa nor Safar al Muzaffar, Allah created every soul and wrote its life, livelihood and trials." [At-Tirmithi]

The above Ahadith clearly prove that the month of Safar al Muzaffar does not have any special characteristics.

Know that performing special prayers in this month to safeguard oneself from evil or abstaining from marrying or from any other happy occasion is nothing but myths.

A Muslim should give up such fairy tales and should follow the Holy Qur'an, sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) and the way of the Sahabah (Prophet's companions) and their followers.
